Draft pick trading?

Post  bholmes4 on May 21st 2010, 9:29 am

Can we trade our draft picks? I was looking through the trade archive and don't see any trades involving picks but I also don't see anything in the rules that prevent it...

I touched on this in your trade block. You can't trade picks directly, but you may be able to work out a PTBNL deal (someone with more authority please feel free to correct me if I am wrong):

You are correct.

Thanks, Brad! Very Happy

So to elaborate a bit...

Trading of draft picks doesn't mesh with the free agent compensation model, so they have been disabled.

As mentioned though by Brad, we had a rule drawn up a while back that would allow GMs to trade the rights to a player to be named later, but since we moved the draft from mid-season, to an off-season date, the window of opportunity is no longer there even though the rule is still in the books.

I just thought of a way we could still make use of this rule.

Previously all trades that involved a PTBNL had to be closed out by the current season's end. Since the draft was mid-season, this worked out in the fact that you could trade a player away for the rights to an undrafted player. You would received your compensation for the earlier trade after the draft had been completed and you and the other GM involved on the trade, had agreed to ship the newly drafted player.

You were only allowed to have one open ended trade at any given time and the trade had to be fulfilled before you could enter into any other trade agreements.

In other words, once you make a PTBNL trade, you were locked down and couldn't make any other trades until you had fulfilled that trade.

However, I just got to thinking and this thought popped into my head...

What do you guys think about adjusting the 'window' that this rule could be used?

What I would like to propose is that we allow the PTBNL trades to roll over into the off-season and they would then need to be completed prior to opening day for the upcoming season.

This would allow teams to dump vets at the trade deadline in hopes of landing a draft pick type player. The PTBNL trade would then be allowed to roll over into the off-season where our draft is now set.

I think this could work.

Just so long as direct draft pick trading remains prohibited.

As long as the trade is completed prior to another season getting underway I don't see a problem with it.
